Hawaii
Bridget Jones: Mad About the BoyHawaii is the original destination anchoring the screenplay’s yacht plot, and its possible replacement by Sweden becomes a source of confusion during Bridget’s work on The Leaves in His Hair. The contrast between the two locations makes a production problem feel like a story problem: George is stranded with the yacht in Hawaii, while Bridget tries to imagine how the same plot might function around Stockholm.
Hawaii in the Screenplay
Bridget learns from Ambergris Bilk’s notes that, in Ambergris’s understanding, The Leaves in His Hair has shifted to Stockholm. That apparent change leaves Bridget wondering whether Ambergris knows George is stuck with the yacht in Hawaii because a stoner movie has fallen over. The evidence presents Hawaii not as a place Bridget visits, but as the yacht’s existing location in the screenplay’s unsettled plans.
The Sweden Alternative
The geographical shift becomes a practical writing problem as well as a source of misunderstanding. During a meeting, Bridget is too bewildered to engage fully with the discussion about Stockholm versus Hawaii; she suggests letting Saffron prepare a draft and seeing how it comes off the page. George then has to leave to catch a plane to Albuquerque, leaving the screenplay’s competing locations unresolved in the moment.
Later Reconsideration
Bridget returns to the problem while reflecting on Jude’s discouraging experience with internet dating and deciding she would rather work on the screenplay. She wonders how the yacht and honeymoon could work in Sweden rather than Hawaii, and speculates that Stockholm is warm in summer and that one of the members of Abba lives on an island nearby. Hawaii thus remains the point of comparison even as Bridget tries to make the Swedish alternative plausible; the location’s significance lies in the screenplay’s shifting geography and the uncertainty surrounding its development.
